The micro echo chambers of online guitar forums imagine that today we have guitar heroes that compare in some way to the guitar gods of the 60s. Govan's name pops up from time to time as an imagined household name. GG is a great player but in terms of societal interest he's no Clapton, Page, or Jimi.
If he's a guitar god for a few he's still a very minor deity compared to the old-timers:
The sad fact is that there are no longer 'guitar gods' to inspire youngsters (look at that downward interest trend for the big three). Where there's any inspiration today it's probably coming from the 1000+ gear demo guys pimping pedals that nobody really needs.
