Tannoy was bought up by TC some time back and, unfortunately, they have degraded the Tannoy line to such an extent that I would never consider buying any of their current line of monitors for studio use. However, not too many years ago, the Tannoy line of (now legacy) Reveal and Reveal Active speakers were pretty much the best 'bang for the buck' near field studio monitors you could get.
I bought mine back in 2001 or early 2002 and have used them almost every single day for the better part of 13 years. Of course, much depends on your room but, if you have a good room, these monitors will not let you down. 6.5" woofers, 1" tweeters, and 50-watt built-in power amps (Active) give you an accurate representation of your sound. Get your music sounding good on these and they will translate to other systems.
When I originally bought these the idea was that I'd get something decent for the time being and then upgrade in a few years. Well, I've never felt the need to upgrade. And given that a pair of legacy Reveal Active can be had for a couple hundred dollars, these would be a great set of monitors to get started on.
