The Cultural Relevance of Yngwie vs. Van Halen

In their prime, Van Halen filled stadiums with men, women, boys and girls and rocked the world.

For years, Van Halen provided the soundtrack to summer.

Who cares about Yngwie? 99% of his fans are old men and a smattering of youngsters who noodle around on guitar in their bedrooms.

The last time I had an opportunity to see Yngwie I passed it up. A friend went and said that maybe 50 people were in attendance: about 40 old guys and a few nephews and sons. It turned out to be a Rogaine and Ritalin mini-fest.

Looking at Google Trends worldwide from 2004 to the present it appears that Yngwie has not only circled the drain but has pretty much vanished from the popular imagination.

Google returns about 3.9 million pages for Yngwie.

Van Halen, on the other hand, still has a heartbeat.

Google returns over 87 million pages for Van Halen.

In the history of rock music Yngwie earns a footnote somewhere whereas Van Halen earns their own chapter.
